‘Baseless and Self Obsessed’ is about Generation Z, often called lazy, entitled, snowflakes; stereotypes that the right-winged media perpetuate to intensify a ‘culture war’. The title draws directly from these labels echoed by a sitter. The generation feels an overwhelming pressure to fix the current socio-economic climate. Whilst they are not the only generation that have contended with harsh socio-economic climates, they have not experienced anything close to social, economic, or political stability in their lifetime.
The project has been born out of Marchant’s concern over the future and that of his peers, thinking he cannot be the only one feeling this anxiety; as part of Generation Z, the conditions explored within this work affects him directly.
Baseless speaks actively about conditions surrounding the generation, alerting the audience to the issues that concern them. Simultaneously, the work renegotiates the stereotypes given to them, representing the generation on their own terms.
